In collaboration with BottleCycler and cleaning contractors Quayclean, Marvel Stadium is on track to recycle 60,000kg of glass in a 12-month period. This is all thanks to the installation of 11 BottleCycler machines throughout the venue.

In terms of environmental benefits, this equates to removing ten cars from the road or saving 157 cubic metres of landfill. Each BottleCycler machine is installed near the bar and can crush around 80 glass bottles every minute.

A functional (and cost-efficient) way to help the environment

BottleCycler machines are the perfect behind-the-bar solution for hospitality venues, and their success is clearly on show at Marvel Stadium. Previously, the glass would be discarded along with other general waste and recycling, creating significant labour costs for sorting into waste streams.

Each machine stores up to 300 crushed bottles, and sensors let staff know when the bin is full of crushed glass so that it can be easily removed. Staff simply attach a handle to the bin and wheel it outside for collection by BottleCycler. A new empty bin is placed into the stainless-steel cabinet of the BottleCycler machine, and the process starts again. The crushed glass is taken to a processing facility, where it is recycled into new bottles.

Easy for staff

Aside from the environmental benefits, there is also evidence that BottleCycler machines are far easier for staff to deal with. Zac Larmer, the Quayclean contract manager who looks after Marvel Stadium, has reported that staff previously found it nearly impossible to move large waste bins when full. The BottleCycler machine, however, is much more streamlined. Plus, it only takes a 5-minute demonstration for staff to learn how to use it.

The compact size of the BottleCycler machines has also been a win for venue staff. Mr Larmer has suggested that workers gain about 20% more workspace because the BottleCycler machine keeps pathways clear. Regular collections from BottleCycler ensure that workspaces stay neat and tidy.

A renewed focus on sustainability

The new BottleCycler machines were planned for installation at Marvel Stadium before Covid forced the cancellation of sporting events. However, with 11 machines now in action, particularly those close to the bars on levels C and D of the stadium, operators are seeing the benefits.

David Hrabal, Technical Venue Manager for the AFL, was glowing in his assessment of the BottleCycler system. Previously, around 98% of the waste from Marvel Stadium was going to landfill. Since BottleCycler machines were installed, this waste is now down to 63%.

While Mr Hrabal admits there is still plenty of work to do, he highlights that environmental concerns weren’t necessarily considered when older stadiums were built. Today, every stadium upgrade incorporates a focus on sustainability.
